West Nile fever, hantavirus infections and leishmaniasis will soon play a major role in Central Europe

According to the World Health Organization, about 20 percent of the contagious infectious diseases known today are transmitted by vectors, so-called VBD or vector-borne diseases, and more than 50 percent of the world’s population lives in areas where the risk of contracting a vector-borne infectious disease is very high. In Europe alone, an average of well over 80,000 people contract such an infection every year.
